Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
