Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
